Mosaic Press has long championed works that explore the Black experience in Canada and beyond...
For nearly fifty years, Mosaic Press has been at the forefront of publishing bold, diverse voices that challenge, inspire, and redefine Canadian literature. From pioneering anthologies to groundbreaking individual voices, our catalogue reflects enormous literary talent of diverse Canadian communities.
As we launch Forgotten Exiles: Short Stories by internationally acclaimed author Cyril Dabydeen, we take a moment to highlight the Black authors and stories that have been an essential part of our publishing history.
In 1990, we published Making It: Black Youth, Racism and Career Aspirations in a Big City by Carl E. James, a bold examination of systemic barriers facing Black youth. In 1997, we brought readers A Fly in a Pail of Milk: The Herb Carnegie Story, the memoir of a trailblazing hockey player whose legacy is now honored in the Hockey Hall of Fame and on film in Beyond Their Years (2023).
More recently, From Innocence to Impudence: Growing Up in Trinidad by Awadh Jaggernath (2016) provided a vivid portrait of family life in the Caribbean, while Bernadette Gabay Dyer’s Segovia Stories (2022) and Stone Woman: A Collection of Poems (2022) offered lyrical and compelling narratives of heritage, migration, and resilience.
Some recent feedback on Dyer's Segovia Stories:
"I am captivated by your multi-genre storytelling style, which engages with issues of race, multiculturalism, and the Black diaspora in Canada. I am deeply moved by your efforts to articulate diverse experiences of different cultural groups and marginalized communities." —Free University of Brussels
Now, with the release of Forgotten Exiles, Cyril Dabydeen—a writer hailed by World Literature Today as “a significant post-colonial writer”—delivers a collection of short stories that explore displacement, memory, and the deep currents of history. His work joins a proud tradition at Mosaic Press of publishing literature that amplifies the voices of Black and Caribbean authors in Canada and worldwide.
