Cyril Dabydeenâs Forgotten Exiles presents vibrant, humorous, and emotionally charged stories that explore displacement, identity, and belonging. Drawing on his Guyanese and Caribbean roots, Dabydeen reflects on his life in the 1970s, from planting trees in the rugged landscapes around Lake Superior to navigating cultural divides between Canada and the Amazon. His rhythmic prose and vivid imagery tackle themes of race, class, and self-discovery, with love triangles and social concerns at the heart of these compelling narratives, reaffirming Dabydeenâs mastery of contemporary fiction.
Selected Praise for Cyril Dabydeen:
âDabydeen is a short story master ... narratives deal with ... human relationships at the personal level, but also with the coming together of countries and continents.â
â Canadian Literature
âThere is a kaleidoscopic quality to these short stories, a shifting and colliding of the bits of coloured glass held up to the light.â
â Montreal Serai
â[Dabydeen] captures the spirit of the displaced, the dislocated, and the alien within the Canadian experience.â
