A wry and thoughtful collection that celebrates quiet acts of courage in the everyday lives of ordinary people
A bold new literary debut from one of Canada’s accomplished and versatile cultural voices. Daniel Janke—composer, filmmaker, and writer—turns his creative talents to fiction with Book of Heroes, a compelling exploration of everyday heroism through the lens of flash fiction.
Imbued with wry humour and subtle irony, these stories shine a light on the quiet, often overlooked acts of courage that shape our daily lives. In a world marked by uncertainty, Book of Heroes offers a gently surreal and thought-provoking escape—reminding us that sometimes, simply getting out of bed can be an act of bravery.
This collection draws stylistic comparisons to Stephen Leacock’s Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town and the travel writings of Bruce Chatwin, blending realism with the fantastical in a tone that is both familiar and unexpected. Structured in interconnected chapters, some of the stories form composites, building a textured portrait of resilience, absurdity, and human dignity.
